When I was a girl, I was terribly sure trees and flowers were the same as birds or people. That they thought things, and talked among themselves. And we could hear them if we really tried. It was just a matter of emptying your head of all other sounds. Being very quiet and listening very hard. Sometimes I still believe that. But one can never get quiet enough.

"I never had an imaginary friend, just imaginary circumstances. I was so into the Indiana Jones movies and I would constantly reenact circumstances. I broke my left arm three times, two of which were me trying to be Indiana Jones. The first time, I tied sheets together and tried to climb the side of my house after I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. The second time, I was riding a horse and trying to gallop as fast as I could, like Indiana Jones, and got thrown from the horse. The third time I was bit older and it didn’t have anything to do with trying to be Indiana Jones" — Pedro Pascal interviewed by Sarah Paulson for Interview

Don’t date men who disrespect women, doesn’t matter if he’s nice to you. If he’s constantly disrespecting other women, nah.

If he’s constantly disrespecting other women, he’ll get around to you sooner or later.

Let’s be honest, us falling in love was a matter of pure chance. I met you among the many rows of a chain bookstore and the only reason I managed to speak a word to you was because you happened to pick up a book I was currently rereading (which in itself was the result of a string of random events). I went to the bookstore in the first place to find an author a friend had been talking about and to lose myself among the stacks.

All this is to say I could have just as easily fallen in love with someone else. Our whole history with each other is ephemeral. It could just as well have been otherwise. Who we love is not really up to us. We are bound by the choices we make, the cities we live in, the people we meet, the friends we have. In psychology, there’s something called propinquity, which means that the closer you are to someone, the more likely you are to be attracted to them. We actually have very little freedom in whom we end up loving. You are not my soul mate and I am not yours. I don’t believe we are ‘meant’ for each other in the same way the waves are meant to kiss the shore. In this sense, I am a realist.

But in a very real way, every fortuitous encounter, every random chance, every coincidence has been leading me to you for years. I am not concerned with the thousand potential loves I have or the thousand potential loves you have. I am only concerned with the touch of your skin in the darkness and your scent that seeps into my bones after a night together. I am concerned with shaking the dust out of your hips and rubbing my fingers against the backs of your knees.
